With PKD in Michael’s family, they had concerns about passing the disease onto the next generation. Working with a geneticist, Micah discovered ways to ensure a PKD-free future for their children. The couple used IVF and PGT-M to have four healthy PKD-free children.

Announcer: A national program is helping stop the spread of a genetic kidney disease to the Next Generation and Utahans are playing a part. Polycystic Kidney Disease causes cyst to grow on the kidneys often causing kidney failure for patients later in life and requiring daily treatment the disease. It is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure in the US but one Utah couple is taking part in the PKD-Free Babies initiative using in-vitro fertilization to screen embryos for that disease and then prevent passing it on.

Michael: I was excited to know that yeah, we could stop this disease with me that we didn't have to pass it on to our kids and that our you know our kids could grow up and not have to worry about this particular health issue that you know is prevalent in my family.
